The Mekong river - The longest river in Indochina is divided into nine tributaries within Vietnamese territory and has given birth to the vast Mekong Delta. The Mekong Delta is often referred as the rice bowl and the garden of heaven, because of its rich soil which is the breeding ground for dozens of vegetables, fruit and flowers. A visit to this region allows you to experience the daily life on the water of the local people. Because of periodical floods the local people adapted their lives to the water. Visits to their floating houses, floating schools, floating markets you will be overwhelmed by their wet rice civilization.

Itinerary

Day 1: Saigon - My Tho - Can Tho city (L)
08.00am: Meet in the lobby of your hotel in Ho Chi Minh and drive to My Tho - the heart of the Mekong delta. Take a boat trip on Mekong River to Phoenix Island where local handicraft and sweets from coconut are being produced. Enjoy fresh seasonal fruits as well as a traditional music and song performance. Take a short ride on a horse carriage to a typical local house to taste some homemade honey-tea. Proceed by small sampan boat through the small canals and side-arms of the river to observe the daily life along the river banks with a stop and short leisurely walk at Turtle Island. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant before driving to Can Tho. Accommodation in Can Tho.

Day 2: Can Tho - Cai Rang floating market - Saigon (B,L)
This morning board your boat for a visit to the fascinating floating market at Cai Rang. See local farmers trading their produce on the water as they have done for centuries and watch the local people, making boats and husking rice. Return to Ho Chi Minh City with lunch en route.
